The case for boring technology in flashy websites

There's a graveyard nobody talks about at awards ceremonies: last year's winners. Click through an archive of Site of the Day picks from three years ago and count the broken builds, the abandoned dependencies, the WebGL scenes that no longer compile. Spectacle has a shelf life when it's built on experimental foundations.

Our rule is simple: be radical in the layer users see, conservative in every layer they don't. The visual language can gamble. The stack cannot.

What boring buys you

  • Hiring: any senior React engineer can maintain our builds a year later.
  • Longevity: Next.js, TypeScript and Tailwind have institutional momentum measured in decades, not hype cycles.
  • Performance: mature tools have had their slow paths found and fixed by millions of users.
  • Sleep: your on-call rotation is quiet when your dependencies are dull.

Where we spend the risk budget

Every project gets exactly one exotic bet, usually the hero moment. A custom shader, an audio-reactive scene, a physics interaction. It's isolated behind a lazy boundary, feature-detected, and designed to degrade to something still beautiful. If the bet fails on some device we never tested, the site loses a garnish, not a limb.

Be radical in the layer users see. Be conservative in every layer they don't.

A boring stack is why a site still builds, still scores green, and still books work years after launch. That's the flashiest thing about it.
